Photography Workshop: Albumen and Salt Prints

Join Luther Gerlach, nationally recognized photographer specializing in 19th-century techniques, and learn to make albumen and salt prints in this two-session studio workshop. Participants will explore vintage cameras, lenses, and historic photographic processes while taking an albumen print from negative to final print. Complements the exhibition Dialogue among Giants: Carleton Watkins and the Rise of Photography in California. Course fee $65; $50 students. Open to 25 participants. Course repeats Sundays, January 18 and 25.

Figure Drawing: Quick Sketch

Working in a quick sketch format, participants will have the opportunity to work from the life model to enhance their drawing skills and practice capturing the underlying structure of the human body. Artist Peter Zokosky provides general guidance on approaching the figure and capturing the essential gesture. All levels welcome. All you need to bring are sketch pads and dry media. Course fee $25. Nature as It Is, or as It Ought to Be: The Great French Tradition of Landscape Painting in the Getty Museum

In this course, Mary Morton, associate curator of paintings, the J. Paul Getty Museum, highlights new acquisitions in her discussion of the creation of a new style of landscape painting and the ultimate revolt of painters against the grand tradition of the 17th through the 19th centuries. A guided gallery tour follows the lecture. The course is part of the Works in Dialogue series and complements the exhibition Sur le motif: Painting in Nature around 1800. Course fee $15. Artist Sylvana Barrett leads a master class in manuscript illumination focusing on the historic materials and painting techniques of famed illuminators the Limbourg brothers, creators of the sumptuous masterpiece The Belles Heures of the Duke of Berry. Participants will prepare parchments, pigments, and binders to create a miniature in the manner of this 15th-century masterwork. Previous painting or illustration experience required. Renaissance artists used silver wire to create delicate underdrawings in panel paintings as well as fine, in finished drawings.
