The story of Moche culture traces one of the most remarkable developments in the ancient Americas. The Moche peoples thrived on the north coast of Peru from about 100 to 850 CE, transforming the landscape with sacred spaces dedicated to their gods and creating sophisticated masterworks in clay, metal, and textiles. Archaeologist Carlos Rengifo shares insights about the Moche and how their use of narrative imagery reflects a highly developed society whose unity depended on rituals and ceremonies.

La historia de la cultura Mochica trata uno de los desarrollos más notables en América precolombina. Las poblaciones mochicas prosperaron en la costa norte del Perú entre los años 100 y el 850 d.C. aproximadamente, transformando el paisaje con espacios sagrados dedicados a sus dioses y creando sofisticadas obras maestras en arcilla, metal y textiles. El arqueólogo Carlos Rengifo comparte conocimientos y perspectivas sobre los mochicas, y cómo sus imágenes con carácter narrativo reflejan una sociedad altamente desarrollada cuya unidad dependía de rituales y ceremonias.
About the Speaker
Dr. Carlos Rengifo is an archaeologist, researcher, lecturer, and cultural heritage consultant specializing in the ancient Moche culture of northern Peru. He has worked on several archaeological projects in this region, including serving as research director of the Huacas de Moche Archaeological Project, leading excavations and studies on this extensive Moche site in the Peruvian coastal desert. Dr. Rengifo’s research examines ancient funerary practices, urban development, and socio-political change over time, revealing what life was like in pre-Columbian communities.
El Dr. Carlos Rengifo es arqueólogo, investigador, conferencista y consultor de patrimonio cultural especializado en la cultura Mochica del norte del Perú. Ha trabajado en varios proyectos arqueológicos en esta región, llegando a desempeñarse como director de investigación del Proyecto Arqueológico Huacas de Moche, liderando excavaciones y estudios en este importante sitio Mochica de la desértica costa norte peruana. Las investigaciones del Dr. Rengifo abordan temas cómo las prácticas funerarias, el desarrollo urbano y los cambios sociopolíticos a lo largo del tiempo, revelando cómo era la vida en las comunidades precolombinas.
