David Tudor's Sea Tails / Jackie Matisse and Robert Cassoly

The Getty Research Institute's media collections document the growth of video as an artistic medium internationally from the late 1960s to the present, with a primary focus on the 1970s and 1980s. The Long Beach Museum of Art Video Archive contains more than 4,000 works from the Americas, Europe, and other parts of the world, with especially strong collections of work from California. The archives of Allan Kaprow, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Watts, Wolfgang Stoerchle, and High Performance Magazine contain smaller collections of film/video art, performance, and event documentation focusing on both individual figures and their peers. The David Tudor and Mary Caroline Richards archives reveal the significance of postwar collaboration among visual artists, musicians, dancers, and—in the case of the Experiments in Art and Technology archive—scientists. Recent acquisitions are extending holdings of video and performance work from Brazil, Japan, and Southern California.
