Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road
敦煌莫高窟: 中國絲綢之路上的佛教藝術

Sewn with silk thread on a hemp backing, the Miraculous Image of Liangzhou (ca. 700 CE), one of the Mogao Grottoes' exquisite textiles, is currently on view as part of the exhibition
Cave Temples of Dunhuang. The figure at the center of this embroidery references a supernatural sculpture of the Buddha, which appeared near the Silk Road city of Liangzhou, China. This exhibition celebrates more than 25 years of collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dunhuang Academy to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Public tours of the gallery portion of this exhibition will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.

The Getty Research Portal™, a free online search platform that provides access to over 100,000 digitized art history volumes from a growing number of the world's leading art libraries, celebrates its fourth anniversary this month with a new design that offers improved sorting and filtering, as well as easier navigation for smartphones and tablets.
The Portal also welcomes six new contributors, including the Warburg Institute Library, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Library, the Menil Collection Library, the Bibliotheca Hertziana, the Herzog August Bibliothek, and the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries, Art Institute of Chicago.

Help the GRI Learn More about How Scholars Use Social Media
The GRI has begun a research project to understand how scholars utilize social media platforms in relation to their studies. The goal is to learn how the GRI can best provide the resources and tools for scholars to conduct research and discover new collections, both at the GRI and at other institutions.
The survey takes approximately four minutes, and as a thank you for completing the survey, five participants will be randomly selected to receive a GRI publication.

The World in the Year 1000: The View from Dunhuang

Using the contents of Dunhuang's Library Cave (Cave 17) as clues, Professor Valerie Hansen of Yale University will reconstruct the larger historical context of the cave temples and the city of Dunhuang in the year 1000 CE—the year the cave was sealed. A small selection of the Library Cave's 40,000 objects, including manuscripts, paintings, and textiles, is on view at the GRI as part of the exhibition

Steven Leiber Archive
Pioneering art dealer and collector Steven Leiber helped popularize the concept that ephemera and documentation in itself was integral to the conceptual and avant-garde art movements. Leiber's archive, which comprises more than 2,600 files, including invitations, posters, correspondence, and rare material often collected directly from artists, deepens the GRI's holdings on the work of artists working in the wake of Fluxus and conceptual art.

Brazilian Cordel Literature Collection
Finding Aid
Traditionally composed in verse and with woodcut illustrations on its exemplars' front covers, the Brazilian genre
literatura de cordel—or string literature—derives its name from the way the pamphlets were sold, suspended by a string in Brazilian open-air markets. The GRI's collection includes over 2,000 pamphlets published between 1924 and 1990, arranged into series by region of publication.
