Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road
敦煌莫高窟: 中國絲綢之路上的佛教藝術
Exhibition opens May 7, 2016
Filled with exquisite wall paintings and sculptures, the Mogao Grottoes—located near Dunhuang in China's Gobi Desert—comprise nearly 500 Buddhist cave temples dating from the 4th to the 14th century. This exhibition features numerous objects from the site, some of which have never traveled to the United States, as well as three spectacular full-size cave replicas and a virtual immersive experience of Cave 45.
Cave Temples of Dunhuang celebrates more than 25 years of collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dunhuang Academy to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Public tours of the gallery portion of this exhibition will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m., starting May 10, 2016.

BURDEN

This Los Angeles premiere traces the career of artist Chris Burden (1946–2015) from his early, occasionally terrifying performances, such as
Five Day Locker Piece (1971), to his more recent sculptures, such as
Outdoor Light (2008). The film also features intimate footage of Burden at his Topanga studio. A conversation with the film's directors will follow the screening.

The imperial workshops of 19th-century China were not just home to Chinese artists, but Italian artists as well. Hired through Jesuit missionaries, these painters participated in an artistic exchange that challenged the dogma of European universality.
The Shining Inheritance looks at the professional adaptations and pictorial modifications to Chinese traditions that allowed three of these painters to work in the Chinese cultural sphere.

Finding Aid
The Schaeffer Galleries, run by art dealers Hanns and Kate Schaeffer, specialized in Old Master paintings from all European schools. The core of this collection comprises approximately 2,500 photographs of artworks handled by the galleries from the early 1920s until the late 1980s, filed with documents related to attribution, provenance, acquisition, and sales. The galleries' business correspondence has also been indexed to facilitate searching by the correspondent's name.

Day explains the materials, equipment, and molds that past masters used to create these fanciful objects. This lecture, part of the Art of Food Lecture Series, was held in conjunction with the GRI's exhibition
