The Shining Inheritance: Italian Painters at the Qing Court, 1699–1812

Marco Musillo
The imperial workshops of 19th-century China were not just home to Chinese artists, but Italian artists as well. Hired through Jesuit missionaries, these painters participated in an artistic exchange that challenged the dogma of European universality.
