German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's military training lasted only two months, but left him terrified of further service. Kirchner expressed these fears by creating a series of miniature drawings of the Apocalypse on the backs of discarded cigarette packs. These drawings are now on view as part of the exhibition,
World War I: War of Images, Images of War, which juxtaposes representations of war in visual propaganda with its depiction by artists who experienced the brutality firsthand.
Curators lead gallery tours Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. through April 16, 2015.

Diego Rivera Sketchbook Now Available Online
Diego Rivera's preparatory sketchbook for two San Francisco frescoes, "Allegory of California," and "The Making of a Fresco," is now available online. The sketchbook contains portraits of California miners, as well as penciled love messages from artist Frida Kahlo. The sketchbook can be viewed online through October 6, 2015.

Joseph Cornell Correspondence to Susanna De Maria Wilson
This cache of 33 unpublished letters from American assemblage artist Joseph Cornell to Susanna De Maria Wilson, one of his first assistants, features many examples of the exquisite collage work for which Cornell is best known. Mailed between 1963 and 1968, the letters contain both philosophical musings and practical information, such as directions from Cornell to De Maria Wilson about where to find source material for his collage and assemblage pieces.

Heinrich Geissler Papers, 1857–1996
Finding Aid
German art historian and curator Heinrich Geissler changed the way scholars study 16th- and 17th-century German drawings by shifting the focus of art-historical scholarship away from where an artist was born and onto where the art was produced. Geissler's archive contains a wealth of photographs, notes, and correspondence compiled over 30 years, including materials related to his groundbreaking 1979 exhibition at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
