New Scholar Year Themes for 2015/2016

The GRI and the Getty Villa invite proposals on two separate research themes for the 2015/2016 Scholar Year: Art and Materiality (GRI) and the Classical World in Context: Egypt (Getty Villa). While in residence, Scholars make use of varied collections and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.

The application deadline for the 2015/2016 Scholar Year is November 3, 2014. Due to a system transition, the application will be available beginning September 30, 2014, at the link below.

Now Available as Linked Open Data:
The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names®

The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN), a reference of nearly two million names of current and historical places, is now available as Linked Open Data (LOD). The Getty's Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)® was made available as LOD last February, and a project to publish the other two Getty vocabularies as LOD is underway.

Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films

Through October 12, 2014 | The Getty Center
Yvonne Rainer received a lifetime achievement award from the College Art Association this year for her efforts to merge the visual arts with dance, performance, and filmmaking. Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films showcases Rainer's accomplishments through an array of photographs, journals, audiovisual presentations, and other ephemera drawn from the GRI's Yvonne Rainer Papers, as well as a complete retrospective of Rainer's films.

Experts lead gallery tours Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. through October 9.

Japanese Zen Buddhism and the Impossible Painting

Lecture | September 23, 2014 | 7:00 p.m. | The Getty Center
Created by 32 Zen monks for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi, the 15th-century painting The Gourd and the Catfish is now considered a Japanese national treasure. Join Professor Yukio Lippit as he discusses how the painting exemplifies the use of new modes of artistic representation to depict the nonsensical nature of Zen koans. This lecture is sponsored by the GRI Council.

Yvonne Rainer: Two Works

Performance | October 3 and 4, 2014 | 7:30 p.m. | The Getty Center
Avant-garde choreographer Yvonne Rainer presents her new in-progress work, The Concept of Dust, along with another recent piece, Assisted Living: Do you have any money?. Co-commissioned by the Getty and Performa, The Concept of Dust looks at aging and mortality, and features readings by Rainer and her dancers interwoven throughout the performance. This event complements the GRI exhibition, Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films.

Cindy Nemser Papers, 1966–2012

Finding Aid
Art critic Cindy Nemser is largely known for her involvement with the 1970s feminist art movement. Author of the acclaimed book Art Talk: Conversations with 12 Women Artists, Nemser also served as editor of The Feminist Art Journal from 1972 to 1977. These papers comprise unpublished articles and novels, as well as an extensive collection of taped interviews with artists such as Eleanor Antin, Eva Hesse, and Gordon Matta Clark.
