Between January 2012 and June 2018, two grants funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Division of Research Programs, through its Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions, will provide support for 12 residential postdoctoral fellowships at the Getty Research Institute.
GRI-NEH postdoctoral fellows submit project proposals related to the current scholar year's research theme that are reviewed by an independent NEH selection panel developed by the Research Institute's Scholars Program. Fully integrated into the Getty scholar community, selected fellows are in residence at the Research Institute for appointments of seven to nine months and receive housing and a monthly stipend of $4,200.
Since 1985 the Scholars Program has hosted more than 1,100 scholars and fellows from disciplines within art history and the humanities, including a range of artists, architects, composers, filmmakers, and writers. While in residence, scholars pursue individual research projects, make use of Getty collections, present their research, interact with the local scholar and arts communities, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.
NEH grant funding also provides resources to develop and convene an annual selection panel of scholars and curators not affiliated with the Getty.
