"David R. Godine is a remarkable publisher... He is determined to prove that the day of elegant books has not vanished. And he does prove it. Elegantly."—The New York Times

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the David R. Godine publishing house, David Godine will give a lecture about the letterpress books made by his company between 1970 and 1985 and collected by the Getty Research Institute. This lecture encompasses early letterpress titles as well as transitional titles produced through offset printing, including fiction, nonfiction, photographic, and children's books. In addition, Godine will address the future of the book in the new world of electronic publishing.

One of the country's last remaining independent publishers, Godine has published a distinguished list of books that includes first American editions by John Banville, Richard Rodriguez, Andre Dubus, Mark Doty, and Georges Perec; classic reprints by Donald Hall, Will Cuppy, Ludwig Bemelmans, William Maxwell, and Paula Fox; and classics of foreign literature by Dino Buzzati, Robert Musil, Patrick Modiano, Jose Donoso, and the 2008 Nobel Laureate J.M.G. Le Clézio.

Godine also published the first photography books of Arnold Newman, Joyce Tennyson, Rosamond Purcell, Sally Mann, Paul Caponigro, and George Tice and issued the first books of such acclaimed book artists as Mary Azarian, Barbara McClintock, and Mark Leithauser.

Godine's book, Godine At Forty: A Retrospective of Four Decades in the Life of an Independent Publisher will be available in November 2010.
