The post-war period in Los Angeles is characterized by the growth of a local art scene, the rise of commercial galleries, and an increased national awareness of West Coast art. During the 1950s and 1960s, avant-garde artists in Los Angeles employed distinctive strategies for the display of their art. At the same time, the activities of figures such as Wallace Berman, George Herms, Walter Hopps, and Ed Kienholz offered a counterpoint to any straightforward narrative of artistic boom.

In this talk, Lucy Bradnock, Getty Research Institute Pacific Standard Time scholar, focuses on a number of playful projects that served to interrogate and disrupt the burgeoning art scene through alternative means of displaying and disseminating works.


This event is part of Pacific Standard Time, a research initiative undertaken by the Getty Research Institute in collaboration with the Getty Foundation to document and preserve the history of postwar art in Southern California.
