Agnes Varda / Fabry

For over 50 years, Agnès Varda, the grandmother of the French New Wave, has reimagined the possibilities of cinema. Using her personal history, relationships, and travels as inspiration, Varda expands the documentary genre beyond the screen to the gallery and museum. Join this extraordinary artist for a rare and intimate conversation about her films and latest installations.

In recent years, Varda has created a series of exhibitions that combine photography, film, and media installation to explore memory, tactility, and the passage of time. These new works are a culmination of Varda's career-long explorations of subjectivity and storytelling. Varda, who coined the term "cinécriture" to describe her practice of cinematic writing, has always moved effortlessly across media to capture the nuances of personal narrative.

This conversation between Agnès Varda and Rani Singh of the Getty Research Institute includes films and videos from throughout Varda's career including contemporary exhibition documentation, footage of visits to filmmaker Chris Marker's studio, shot in 2009 and 2011, and excerpts from Agnès de ci de là Varda, Varda's series of documentary travelogues, which includes an episode shot in Los Angeles.

Agnès Varda is the acclaimed director of films including Cléo From 5 to 7 (1962), Le bonheur (1965), Mur murs (1981), Vagabond (1985), and The Gleaners and I (2000). She is celebrated for her skillful engagement of film's documentary and diaristic capacities.

Rani Singh is a senior research associate at the Getty Research Institute.
