Villa Summer Institute
Rediscovering the Villa dei Papiri and its Gardens: A Journey through an Ancient Roman Villa

Professional Development

In this year's Villa Summer Institute, you'll learn about life in an ancient Roman home through the lens of the Getty Villa's collection and site!

The program includes gallery investigations, discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities that will help you create meaningful learning experiences for students about the ancient Roman world that you can incorporate into your classroom curriculum and use during a visit to the Museum.

This summer's schedule:
K–6th grade teachers: July 7, 8, and 9, 2010.
6–12 grade teachers: July 10, 11, and 12, 2010.

The program is free. Applications are due May 14, 2010.

Secondary Teachers' Institute
Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography
June 29–July 2, 2010
The Getty Center

Professional Development

This program will introduce secondary-level teachers of literature, social sciences, and other humanities subjects to the history of photojournalism. Focusing on the exhibition Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography since the Sixties, teachers will learn about photographers who have documented historical events such as war, the Civil Rights movement, and the Depression; as well as social issues, including homelessness and human migration.

Participants are eligible for Los Angeles Unified School District salary points.

The program will run Tuesday–Thursday, June 29–July 1 from 9:30 a.m–3:00 p.m., and Friday, July 2 from 9:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. More details and registration information will be available in June, 2010.

Application Deadline for Art & Language Arts Program Extended

Professional Development

It's not too late to apply for Art & Language Arts, a free one-year program that introduces K–5 teachers to strategies for developing students' skills in language and visual arts. The deadline for applying has been extended to May 10, 2010.

Art & Language Arts includes a week-long summer seminar, three workshops, class observations, and more. Participants receive subsidized buses for Getty visits, and credit towards salary points or continuing education units. Teachers must apply in teams of six to 10 from each school.

The program is free.

Build Vocabulary with ESL Students

Current Exhibitions

This latest installment of our In Focus exhibition series features food—glorious food. It includes bountiful still-lifes, innovative close-ups, and documentary studies.

Explore this exhibition online with ESL students in grades 4–12. Use the lesson "Looking at Still Life Lesson 2: How Artists Assemble Still Lifes," to have students build vocabulary and discuss how artists use shapes to create still-life compositions.

Changes in the Galleries

Did you know that works of art at the Getty Museum are often moved to new locations? Before you bring your class to the Getty, make sure all the artworks you want to visit are on view. Here is one change:

The Sculpture and Decorative Arts galleries on the Plaza Level of the West Pavilion (W101, W102, and W103) are closed for reinstallation and will reopen in fall, 2010. These galleries include our 18th- and 19th-century displays of decorative arts, terracotta, and marble sculpture.

Admission to the Getty is FREE. Admission to the Getty Villa requires an advance, timed ticket. Parking is $15, but FREE after 5:00 p.m. for Saturday evening hours at the Getty Center and for evening events at both locations.
