Laurel Wreath

In ancient Greece and Rome, athletes were heroic figures who put their hometowns on the map. Men and boys competed in foot races, long jump, discus and javelin throwing, boxing, wrestling, and horse and chariot racing. Women and girls competed in foot races in a festival to honor Hera, the wife of Zeus.

Wreaths made of real leaves were awarded as victory prizes, conferring great prestige on the winners. The Getty Villa has many images of winning athletes on statues, vases, carved gemstones, and coins in the Museum's collection.

Award your victorious young athlete in the spirit of ancient Greeks and Romans with this foam laurel wreath. Velcro closure, one size fits most.
